A well-built body is one that has a good amount of muscle mass, because it&#8217;s the muscles that keep the body to stay in perfect shape. But the question that most body builders would ask is this, &#8220;Is gaining muscle without gaining fat possible?&#8221;</p>
<p>Consuming more calories is the key to gaining muscle mass, and too much calories could lead to fat buildup. But if you are aiming for a well-toned body, you should rid yourself of these stubborn fats. The key to gaining muscle without gaining fat is to speed-up your metabolic rate so that those extra fats that you have consumed will be converted to muscles, and will not be stored as body fats.</p>
<p>The following are tips on how to boost-up your metabolism and gain muscles sans the fats:</p>
<p>Eat Right</p>
<p>One of the most important things that you have to do in order for your metabolic rate to increase is to watch what you eat. By eating the right foods, you are preventing those stubborn fats to build-up in your body, and instead, you will end up gaining the right amount of weight. Your diet must consist of complex carbohydrate and proteins, and examples of these are cereals, fruits, whole grains and vegetables &#8211; these foods help to shred-off those extra fats that you&#8217;ve accumulated.</p>
<p>Cardiovascular Training</p>
<p>Contrary to what a lot of people believe, cardio exercises are actually important if you are trying to bulk-up on muscles. One of the reasons why some people would gain fats despite of doing muscle training exercises everyday is because they do not include cardio training on their workout program. If you practice eating more meals in a day, instead of the usual three square meals, your metabolic rate will be increased and therefore, you won&#8217;t have to worry about gaining fats while you bulk-up on muscles.</p>
<p>Monitor your Calorie Consumption</p>
<p>Tracking the amount of calorie that you consume everyday is also very important for you to gain muscles without fats. There are a lot of devices now that were made for the purpose of calculating the calories that you consume out of the foods that you eat daily. Aside from these devices, you can also refer to some websites in the Internet which offers a free calculation of the calories that you have consumed from your daily meals.</p>

The fact is, most people do not meet all their nutritional needs through their food. As a result, many of us rely on multivitamins and supplements to achieve more complete nutrition.</p>
<p>Question: Do you know what those vitamins and minerals are doing in your body? Do you know how much of the product your body actually absorbs when it comes to taking a multivitamin</p>
<p>No federal regulations</p>
<p>Vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements produced and distributed in the U.S. are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. In fact, if you or I wanted to start selling our own personal brands of vitamins, mineral supplements or similar products, we could do so without anyone, including the FDA, having a say in the matter.</p>
<p>This lack of regulation should sound a warning signal about these products&#8217; contents. Most supplements on the market are basically garbage. While they may contain good-for-you ingredients, they do nothing to bolster your nutrition because your body cannot absorb them.</p>
<p>Nutritional companies spend thousands of dollars marketing their products to convince consumers how great they are. For example, the best-known multivitamin brands found in drug and discount stores are virtually useless. Rather than trying to dazzle you with their exaggerated claims, supplement companies would be better off spending their dollars on research to determine that their products really are benefiting you. The quality of a supplement&#8217;s contents is far more important than any sexy claims its manufacturer can make. Your main concerns should be the quality and bioavailability (level of absorption and use by the body) of any product you purchase.</p>
<p>Supplements cannot repair the effects of bad eating</p>
<p>Hippocrates said it best, &#8220;Let food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be thy food.&#8221;</p>
<p>Eating naturally nutritious food is the most important aspect of your diet. The foundation you lay with proper eating habits is far more important than any food supplement you can take. Examine your eating and exercise habits before you consider seeing a doctor for almost any problem.</p>
<p>However, even the best vitamins and supplements available will not propel you to optimal health if you otherwise eat unhealthy food. Say your diet consists mainly of pre-packaged and/or fast foods, but you take your Centrum or One-a-Day, so you talk yourself into thinking you feel fine. Your body knows otherwise, and you may find yourself in big trouble in a few years. All this amounts to is killing yourself slowly.</p>
<p>Why take supplements at all?</p>
<p>Even the most healthful eater might want to consider supplements, due to the lack of nutrients in our soil. Soil in the U.S. slowly has been losing more and more nutrients each year, making our foods less tasty and less nourishing to our bodies.</p>
<p>The single most important health factor is nourishment. If we lack proper nourishment, we will slowly die of disease, obesity and malnutrition. Yes, extremely overweight people are largely malnourished! The way to achieve optimal health is to eat as few calories as possible, while still providing your body with the highest levels of nourishment.</p>

<p>Nothing could be more important to ensure the health of your new baby than taking the best care of yourself before the baby is born. Good prenatal care, eating healthy, drinking enough water and minimizing your exposure to harmful substances all contribute to growing a healthy baby.</p>
<p>Facts and Tips:</p>
<p>o During pregnancy your body needs approximately 1500 mg daily of Calcium. Most of the prescription prenatal vitamin</p>
<p>on the market have no more than 200 mg!</p>
<p>o Folic acid is a supplement known to help prevent Neural Tube Defects in babies. Studies show that you need to be taking 400-800mcg daily and the best time to start is 3 months prior to pregnancy! If you are even considering pregnancy, take a prenatal vitamin daily. (Recommendation &#8211; Ultra Prenatal by Natures Plus)</p>
<p>o 200-300mg of DHA daily during pregnancy: Current research suggests adequate levels of DHA may help increase a developing baby&#8217;s cognitive functioning, reduce the risk of pre-term labor and decrease the risk of postpartum depression.</p>
<p>o Did you know that mercury passes through the placenta to the fetus? Avoid exposure to this toxin as much as you can.</p>
<p>o In NJ, there are 30 standard Metabolic Screening tests performed on newborns. There are 50 available! It doesn&#8217;t cost much to have ALL the tests performed on your baby, and I highly recommend that you have them done.</p>
<p>2. Store you Baby&#8217;s Umbilical Cord Blood</p>
<p>I am a huge advocate of cord blood banking and did so with both of my children. I know it&#8217;s a big investment, but I look at it as an insurance policy. Most likely you will never need it, but if you ever did you would spend your last dime to have it! As a midwife, I have seen people you needed it and had it and those who needed it and didn&#8217;t. It was enough to make the decision to bank an easy one for our family.</p>
<p>Facts and Tips:</p>
<p>o Storing your newborn&#8217;s cord blood means that should there be a need, your baby will have a source of stem cells that is an exact match, with no risk of rejection. There is also a strong possibility that his/her siblings will be a match as well. This is important because clinical studies demonstrate that stem cell transplants are twice as successful when the stem cells come from a family member rather than from a non-relative (e.g., a public bank).</p>
<p>o Today, cord blood stems cells are used in the treatment of over 70 life-threatening diseases, including a wide range of cancers, genetic diseases, immune system deficiencies, and blood disorders.</p>
<p>o I recommend banking with a large national company such as Viacord or Cord Blood Registry, and not the smaller more local banks. You want to ensure that they will be around for the long term and you will have quick and easy access to your cells no matter where you are!</p>
<p>3. Breastfeed your Baby!</p>
<p>What a surprise, I am advocating breastfeeding! It is probably one of the most important things you can do for your child&#8217;s short and long term health, and it&#8217;s free! I won&#8217;t discuss breastfeeding as some sort of &#8220;bonus&#8221; to your child, or the &#8220;ideal food&#8221;. To me it is just a baseline need.</p>
<p>When we discuss the &#8220;benefits&#8221; of breast milk, we almost always refer to how it reduces the risk of various illnesses and chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, allergies, cancer and SIDS. There is nowhere else where we refer to the biological norm as some sort of &#8220;bonus&#8221;. We don&#8217;t say things like &#8220;not smoking reduces your risk of lung cancer&#8221; (that would be silly!); instead we know that &#8220;smoking increases your risk&#8221;. Why isn&#8217;t the same for breastfeeding? Breastfed babies have a normal risk for all of the conditions listed above, and not breastfeeding actually increases their risk!</p>
<p>Facts and Tips:</p>
<p>o Any Breast milk is better than none! Even if you just breastfed while in the hospital, you would be supplying your child with colostrum (a substance loaded with all your immunity) which passes right to your baby and reduces their risk of illness.</p>
<p>o The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of your baby&#8217;s life and then continuation until at least 1 year.</p>
<p>o I believe that any breastfeeding is better than none! It doesn&#8217;t have to be all or nothing.</p>
<p>4. Choose the Right Pediatrician</p>
<p>Your pediatrician is your partner in the health of your baby/child and one of the most important decisions you will make. Make sure that you find someone you completely trust, and have the same basic philosophies as you about health. Ask your friends or people you trust who they are using, but in the end make the decision yourself based on your personal experience. If you are not happy, remember there are many different choices, and just because you started with someone in the hospital doesn&#8217;t mean you have to stay. I switched pediatricians three times until I found someone I was completely comfortable with!</p>
<p>5. Become Informed about Childhood Vaccinations</p>
<p>Whether you are a strong believer in completely vaccinating your child, against the whole idea, or uncertain what all the controversy is all about; becoming knowledgeable and making an informed decision for your child is critical. It is one of the first decisions you will make and understanding your choices, risks and benefits will help you make the decision that is best for your family.</p>
<p>Too many parents come into my shop every day and don&#8217;t even know what &#8220;shots&#8221; there child just had! I find this to be irresponsible and unacceptable for the pediatrician and the parent.</p>
<p>Learn more and understand what diseases the vaccines prevent, their effectiveness, what your risks are if you don&#8217;t stick to the schedule and what alternative options are available. Remember, this is your child and there long term well being is in your hands!</p>
<p>6. Limit your Baby&#8217;s Exposure to Toxins and Chemicals!</p>
<p>We live in a world loaded with toxic chemicals. I am not saying we need to put our children in a bubble, but where ever you can limit their exposure the better off they will be. Chemicals can enter our bodies in several ways; through our skin, in our food and water, breathing it in, etc.</p>
<p>Get informed about what chemicals are in the most common baby products and what to avoid.</p>
<p>Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics warned parents about limiting their child&#8217;s exposure to something called Phthalates (pronounced th-al-ates) and Parabens (pronounced par-ah-bens); the former is a synthetic chemical used to make plastics flexible and stabilize fragrances in many consumer products (i.e. cosmetics) and the latter is a chemical preservative used in skin care products (i.e. shampoos, shaving and cleansing gels, lotions, topical pharmaceuticals and lubricants). In an article published in the February 2008 edition of the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the authors stated that &#8220;young infants are more vulnerable to the potential adverse effects of phthalates given their metabolic capabilities, and developing endocrine and reproductive systems.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facts and Tips:</p>
<p>o Always use organic, non-chemical lotions, washes and creams on your baby and children. What you put on their skin will absorb into their bodies!</p>
<p>o Purchase an organic crib mattress. The fumes that are emitted off regular mattresses can be hazardous and your baby spends a lot of time in there, especially early on.</p>
<p>o Be extremely careful of their exposure to Lead and over-exposure to Fluoride</p>
<p>7. Consider Cloth Diapers!</p>
<p>I know you are all thinking &#8220;Now she has lost it!&#8221; but when I learned about the toxic chemicals that are in our disposable diapers, I thought &#8220;I want a do-over!&#8221; I thought I was doing everything right when I had my babies; I breastfed, I ate healthy and organic food, I avoided harmful chemicals, and then they both sat in plastic for almost 4 years! I just didn&#8217;t know what I know now.</p>
<p>One of the most serious toxic chemicals present in disposable diapers is Dioxin, which in various forms has been shown to cause cancer, birth defects, liver damage, and skin diseases, is a by-product of the paper-bleaching process used in manufacturing disposable diapers, and trace quantities may exist in the diapers themselves.</p>
<p>And what about the material that makes &#8220;superabsorbent&#8221; diapers so absorbent? If you&#8217;ve ever used disposable diapers, you&#8217;ve probably noticed beads of clear gel on your baby&#8217;s genitals after a diaper change. Superabsorbent diapers contain sodium polyacrylate, which absorbs up to 100 times its weight in water. Sodium polyacrylate is the same substance that was removed from tampons in 1985 because of its link to toxic shock syndrome. No studies have been done on the long-term effects of this chemical being in contact with a baby&#8217;s reproductive organs 24 hours a day for upwards of two years.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The current crisis in American health reflects the premise that curing disease is the essence of health. However, as evidence accumulates that modern medicine is not as good at curing today&#8217;s killer diseases as society is at creating them, it appears that a more useful approach to health and wellness would be one that emphasizes health eating and prevention as well as treatment.</p>
<p>This article discusses the five most important things that I personally do and hope you are willing to do to stay healthy and well. Here they are:</p>
<p>1. Be Familiar with Your Health Condition</p>
<p>Knowing more about your health, both when something ails you and when you feel fine, helps you to live a healthier lifestyle. It reduces your fears of health impediments to your quality of life. People who take an active interest not only in their illnesses but also in their overall health are 15 % more likely to feel that their health problems are not reducing their satisfaction with life.</p>
<p>2. Eat Grapes and Oranges and Drink Both Grape and Orange Juice Regularly.</p>
<p>The bioflavonoids (chemical compounds related to vitamin C) in grape juice interferes with the process by which cholesterol sticks to arteries. Regular consumption of grape juice reduces the likelihood of clogged arteries and lowers the risk for heart disease and strokes. Vitamin C, found in many fruits including oranges, also inhibits the process of artery clogging as well as lowers blood pressure. Regular consumption of vitamin C is found to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and premature death.</p>
<p>3. Have a Tomato in Different Ways.</p>
<p>Unlike most fruits and vegetables, the tomato retains its health effects in any form &#8211; cooked or raw. Include some form of tomato product in your diet whether it&#8217;s canned, raw, cooked, in soups, sauce, ketchup or juice, at least five times a week. This provides enough lycopene ( a member of the protective and immunity-building carotenoid family) to cut the risk of cancer and heart disease in half and to improve the health of lungs, eyes, and the skin.</p>
<p>4. Eat Less, But Eat More Often.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re thinking about cutting back on the amount of food you eat by cutting back on the number of times you eat, don&#8217;t do it. Eating fewer times reduces the efficiency of our bodies in processing food as fuel. In other words, skipping meals maximizes the caloric effect of the food we eat. A study found that people who ate five or six times a day had 5% lower total cholesterol and were 45% more likely to be able to sustain their target weight than people ate once or twice a day.</p>
<p>5. Choose a Doctor You Can Connect With.</p>
<p>It is important have a doctor that you can connect with. We need to have a good feeling towards our doctor. This includes knowing that our doctor is truly listening to us and responding positively to our concerns rather than seeing us as just another number. People who rate their doctors as being friendly were two times more likely to seek medical attention at the first sign of distress and were three times more likely to follow medical instructions.</p>
